Apprenticeship Programs Lead to Jobs and Careers in Water Utilities

Posted by

The water utilities industry is growing. People will always need potable water. And that means an opportunity for anyone interested in a career in water utilities. But where to start? Many utilities are offering apprenticeship programs to help new workers “hit the ground running.”

One such program is being offered by a Tacoma, Washington utility. It’s Tacoma Water's Potable Water Supply and Service Worker Apprenticeship Program. And it provides the detailed, pre-journey-level training and on-the job experience young water workers need to become skilled, competent journey-level employees.

To qualify for the apprenticeship program, you must be at least 18 years of age and a high school, vocational school, or GED graduate. You must also complete a city sponsored math class or take a math proficiency exam--both sponsored by Tacoma Water--and achieve a minimum 2.0 grade.

In addition, you need to first be hired as a permanent Water Utility Worker. You’ll then undergo a nine-month probationary period. After three months of probation, you’ll be eligible to apply to the apprenticeship program. Acceptance is on a space available basis. Once you are hired as a permanent Water Utility Worker, you’ll need to enter and complete the apprenticeship training within 3-1/2 years from the date you were permanently hired. If you’re a US veteran, you may be able to use your G.I. Bill benefits during your apprenticeship training.

Tacoma’s apprenticeship program calls for 3,000 hours of on-the-job training and 11 after-hours classes. These classes are usually conducted from 5 to 9 p.m., one night a week. You must maintain a GPA of 2.1 or better. Once you complete the program, you can apply for a journey-level job with Tacoma Water.
