How New Air Force Leave Policies Impact You

Recent changes to Air Force leave policies can have a significant impact on today's Airmen and Airwomen. A successful career in the Air Force calls for adaptability and change. It's something you simply have to get used to.

For example, if you begin your leave or are signing up for space-available travel on a non-duty day, you’re considered to be on leave and that day will be chargeable as leave. If you work Monday through Friday and start your leave on Saturday, Saturday counts as the first day of leave. If you start leave during the workweek and return on Saturday, the last day of chargeable leave is Friday. If you begin your leave during a work week and return on Sunday, the last day of chargeable leave is Saturday. Finally, if you return from leave on a Sunday or holiday, that day won't be charged as leave.

Reversing the rules for determining the first and last day of chargeable leave brings the Air Force in line with DoD's leave policy. LeaveWeb will not automatically differentiate between the last day of leave and the last chargeable day of leave, Both you and your supervisor must input the correct chargeable days into the program based on your duty schedule. You and your supervisor should carefully review Air Force Guidance Memorandum 2 to AFI 36-3003, Military Leave Program, paragraphs (i) through (m), before finalizing your leave request.

Additional leave policy changes include widening the scope of emergency leave requests, which now include allowing leave when a service member, their spouse or immediate family is admitted into an intensive care due to a major illness or accident.

Service members granted educational leave would now be charged leave for scheduled school breaks and extended holiday periods--unless they return to duty during those breaks and school holidays.

If you have questions regarding these leave changes, contact your servicing military personnel section or service center at 800-525-0102 or DSN 665-5000.
