When you are working on a new email marketing campaign or writing a product description for your website, deciding what to write can present a challenge. If you are feeling lost, here are 5 ways to be more persuasive.

The key to increasing your sales is presenting your product in the best way possible. When you work in a sales based environment like sales or marketing, there are times when you have to do it yourself. One of the more frequent ways to do this is through an email marketing campaign, product website or simply a direct mailing to your customers.

If you're like me, deciding what to write and how to say it in a way that encourages sales is hard. Still, you don't have to be a professional copy writer in order to write great sales copy. All you have to do is try to be as persuasive as possible, without going overboard.

To help you out, here are 5 secrets to making your text more persuasive.

  • Present both sides of an argument – A persuasive message should at least appear to be balanced. Mention the reasons why someone shouldn't invest in a product or service, just make sure you shoot it down. Before you write, think of some of the most common objections and overcome them in your text.

  • Likeability – It's a fact that people prefer to buy things from companies and sales people that they like. In text, you can boost your likeability by praising your audience and showing them how you are both similar. Of course, you already knew that, didn't you? See, I knew that you all were really smart.

  • Be an authority – Here's the thing, people like taking the advice of an authority figure. This makes it easier and they don't have to waste the time to come up with their own opinion. If you have a quote or advice from an expert, be sure to include it.

  • Pay attention to your medium – If your message is hard to understand or it is complex, write about it. If it is really simple, and that is a key selling point, make a video explaining the product.

  • Rinse and repeat – Determine what it is you want your customer to believe, and restate this “truth” several times throughout the text. It doesn't even matter if it is true or not. If you say it enough, people will belief it.

  • Tell them their social group is doing it – We tend to all have a herd mentality, even if we struggle against it. Tell your customers what their social group is doing, and they will be more likely to do it themselves.

Writing a successful email marketing campaign doesn't have to be difficult. Using these tips, you should be able to write persuasive copy anytime.
