    Senior Advanced Process Control Engineer

    Job Summary

    The Marathon Carson Refinery has an opening for an Senior Advanced Process Control (APC) Engineer. This position will provide technical support related to advanced multi-variable process control applications for optimization of plant operations. This position reports to the APC Supervisor in the Process Control Group at the Los Angeles Refinery.

    The APC Engineer's primary role is to build new and maintain existing APC's. This role requires strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. APC Engineers will apply state-of-the-art technology with regard to multi-variable control and optimization to improve process safety and to increase the economic efficiency of refining operations. APC Engineers work in a team environment with unit operators and engineers of other disciplines to maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize existing refinery assets. APC Engineers will monitor emerging technology and will interface with corporate refining technologists to help determine future strategies and investments. APC Engineers document, communicate, provide training, and work through issues, changes, notices, and impacts to customer with regard to advanced multi-variable process control.

    The available schedules for the position are 9/80, 5/40 or 4/1, after hours calls occur approximately once a month and support of TAR approximately two times a year.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Maintain performance of installed Advanced Process Control (APC) applications.

    • Improve stability robustness, economic performance, and Health/Environmental/Safety performance of APC applications.

    • Enhance economics by maintaining knowledge of targets, economic drivers, and constraints limiting profitability.

    • Maintain knowledge of future plans for changing operating conditions and equipment modifications.

    • Work collaboratively with refinery resources to identify and develop new APC applications to maximize profitability.

    • Execute projects to develop or modify APC applications.

    • Produce and/or update APC documentation.

    • Monitor and communicate APC key performance indicators (KPI's) for assigned areas.

    • Identify the need for and provide training to Operations and other refinery personnel on APC applications.

    • Act as a lead or a participant in incident investigations and participate in the Management of Change (MOC) process.

    • Support the development of APC knowledge and skills within MPC.

    • Collaborate with the Control Systems Team, OT, and vendors on APC System upgrades.

    • Stay aware of and act on APC vendor product alerts and notifications.

    • Develop multi-year plan for APC Controller validations and audits, including post TAR evaluations.

    • Self-motivated with detailed analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent communication skills (written & verbal), and strong collaboration skills.

    Education, Experience and Skills

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineer. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)

    • Must have 7 years of experience as an Engineer in refining, petrochemical or related industry.

    • Must have 5 years of experience with advanced multi-variable process control.

    • Must be proficient with APC tools. (Aspentech, DMC3, DMCPlus, RMPCT, or equivalent)

    • Must be proficient in writing detailed data analysis and reports.

    • Must be proficient in Microsoft: Word, Excel and Outlook.

    • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery (respirator), be able to physically perform all tasks in the field and take hair drug test and physical.

    • Must have a valid driver's license. (MPC determines valid status.)

    • Must be legally authorized to work in the US without the need for future VISA sponsorship.

    • Travel Requirement is 10 %. (Training and Seminars)

    • The available schedules for the position are 9/80, 5/40 or 4/1, after hours calls occur approximately once a month and support of TAR approximately two times a year.

    • Ability to work extended hours, on occasion, including nights and weekends in process operations environment and during periods of inclement weather.

    • Ability to access areas of the refinery requiring use of stairs and/or ladders to inspect equipment.

    • Ability to maintain on-call status and respond to emergencies as necessary during off-hours.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • 10 plus years of experience as an Engineer in refining, petrochemical or related industry is preferred.

    • Ability to build/develop advanced multi-variable process control models from inception to commissioning is preferred.

    • Ability to manage APC related tags and troubleshoot communications within Honeywell: Experion & TPS/TDC is preferred.

    • Ability to manage historian tags with OSI Soft Pi System is preferred.
