The Applied Physics Laboratory is a research unit at the University of Washington. Our research expertise is in ocean physics and engineering, ocean and medical acoustics, polar science, environmental remote sensing, and signal processing. We conduct research and development that is sponsored by a variety of federal and state agencies and take great pride in our long-standing status as a US Navy-designated University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). We are seeking to hire a temporary (6-month, fixed duration) for a Maintenance Mechanic 1 within the Resources and Facilities team.
Under the general supervisor of the Logistics and Shipping/Receiving Manager, The Maintenance Mechanic 1 position will be responsible for maintaining warehouse cleanliness and organization and will perform simple logistics tasks. This position will be responsible for assisting in the APL storage request, surplus, demolition of equipment, and trucking/forklift services, and will perform simple building maintenance tasks as needed. Other duties may be assigned as needed to support the APL mission. In support of APL's research mission and strategic goals, the focus of this position is to assist in keeping the infrastructure of the Applied Physics Laboratory's facilities and vehicle fleet in working order. APL Facilities includes the management of seven (7) buildings and storage/dock areas as well as a vehicle and forklift fleet.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Minimum Qualifications: High school graduation or GED equivalent; OR, six months' full-time related vocational study or training; OR, six months' applicable work experience; AND, one year's full-time experience as a helper in building and equipment maintenance, construction, repair work, or equivalent.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. Desirable Qualifications: * Forklift driving skills capable of competently driving a 16,500 lb. forklift. * Able to drive large box trucks (~35 feet long). * Be able to operate basic power tools such as drills, saws, etc.
Conditions of Employment: * US Citizen. * Maintaining a valid WA driver's license and maintaining active certifications including forklift. * Capable of lifting 50 lbs. * Ability to perform demanding physical labor. * Work hours of full crew must provide coverage for standard business hours of 8 am - 5 pm. Starting shift may begin as early as 7 am.
