  • What You Will Do

    This position will be filled at either the Designer/Drafter 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

    Los Alamos National Laboratory is looking for an experienced Designer Drafter 1/2 to join our team within the Plutonium Facilities Engineering Division (PFE-DO), TA-55 Designer/Drafter group (PFE-DD). The PFE Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) develops, maintains, and applies a diverse set of engineering capabilities to provide innovative engineering solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security mission. Within the Laboratory, virtually all plutonium operations occur at TA-55. This site is the nation's most modern plutonium science and manufacturing facility, and it is the only fully operational, full-capability plutonium facility in the nation.

    Designer/Drafter 1 ($46,300 - $71,400)

    Early career level experience and skills using 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce models, drawings, layouts and engineering concepts. Generates partial design packages for complex components, assemblies, facilities, equipment and/or systems. Independently defines modeling structure for large, complex design projects and resolves design package issues by facilitating design reviews, collaborating with engineers and stakeholders on hardware design, fabrication, assembly and testing. Introductory knowledge of engineering concepts and advanced skills in product data management and/or configuration management of part and assembly definition.

    Designer/Drafter 2 ($51,200 - $78,700)

    In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level you'll be working as part of a design team assessing, maintaining, and upgrading facility systems at LANL. Regular functions include but are not limited to; Creating detailed three-dimensional and two-dimensional facility designs visits to facilities to evaluate existing conditions; identifying and documenting existing deficiencies; producing calculations and design recommendations; develop initial design solutions for new facilities, additions, renovations and repairs for Engineer review and approval.

    What You Need

    Minimum Job Requirements:

    • Fundamental knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit.

    • Experience with completing basic facility designs for engineering review and drafting the design drawings in

    • Computer-aided design software.

    • Ability to prepare changes in design documents and drafting techniques/procedures in area of discipline.

    • Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both written and verbally.

    Additional Job Requirements for Designer/Drafter 2:

    In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

    • Basic knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit.

    • Experience with completing basic facility designs for engineering review and drafting the design drawings in

    • Computer-aided design software.

    • Basic knowledge/experience with facility piping, utilities and compotents.

    • Ability to prepare changes in design documents and drafting techniques/procedures in area of discipline.

    • Ability to train/mentor newer Designer/Drafters.

    • Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both written and verbally.

    Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a High School diploma or equivalent and 1 year of experience.

    Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a High School diploma or equivalent and 3 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Expert knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling and design

    • Utilize working knowledge of three-dimensional (3D) model generation

    • Basic knowledge of facility codes and standards.

    • Expert knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals and procedures

    • Experience in DOE/NNSA nonreactor nuclear facilities and radiological facilities or projects.

    • Q-Clearance

    • Knowledge of LANL policies

    • Knowledge of DOE and LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals and procedures

    • AutoCAD Certification

    Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

    Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.     Additional Details

    Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 (~~~) . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

    Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

    *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (~~~) for additional information.

    New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

    Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
