  • The Synchrotron Studies of Materials Group in MSD aims to solve prominent problems in materials science and condensed matter physics through measurements enabled by novel use of x-ray light sources. The current focus is to take advantage of coherent and ultrafast x-rays to observe, under controlled conditions, the fundamental mechanisms of structural evolution in quantum materials, materials for energy, and materials for microelectronics.

    The Synchrotron Studies of Materials Group is seeking applicants for an early-career staff scientist position in materials and x-ray science. Although exceptional candidates in all areas of materials will be considered, particular emphasis will be placed on expertise in determination of structure/dynamics/property relationships in energy materials, quantum materials, or materials for microelectronics using in-situ and real-time x-ray methods at synchrotrons and x-ray free electron lasers, as well as ultrafast optical techniques using table-top laser systems. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research in a dynamic and collaborative environment of materials scientists, physicists, and chemists. The researcher will leverage the resources and expertise at Argonne, especially the Advanced Photon Source after the completion of its upgrade, to consistently execute research at the forefront and intersection of materials and x-ray science and to successfully pursue funding from appropriate sponsors to grow the research activities of the Synchrotron Studies of Materials Group in MSD. Candidates should be early-career scientists (2-5 years from completion of Ph.D.) with outstanding publication records, scientific leadership in a team setting, and vision for future materials science campaigns at x-ray light sources.

    Position Requirements

    • A Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, or related discipline and two to five years of research in academia, industry, or a national laboratory setting.

    • Deep expertise and knowledge of synchrotron or x-ray free electron laser-based materials science, condensed matter physics, or x-ray physics.

    • Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.

    Additional desirable skill

    • Expertise utilizing coherent x-ray beams to extract structural and dynamic characteristics of materials.

    • Expertise in ultrafast materials characterization such as pump-probe measurements, second harmonic generation, and terahertz spectroscopy.

    • A background in energy materials, quantum materials, or materials for microelectronics, including in-situ studies of materials synthesis, processing, and functioning.

    • Experience with developing x-ray data analysis and modeling of materials.
